How to Fix a Refrigerator That's Not Cooling
A refrigerator that isn't cooling puts hundreds of dollars of food at risk. Before calling an appliance repair technician, try these common fixes — dirty condenser coils and poor door seals account for more than half of all refrigerator cooling problems.
Likely Causes
- 1Dirty condenser coils reducing heat exchange efficiency
- 2Failed door gasket letting warm air in
- 3Evaporator fan motor not circulating cold air
- 4Condenser fan motor not removing heat
- 5Thermostat set incorrectly (or dial accidentally turned)
Food above 40°F for more than 2 hours is at risk of bacterial growth. Remove perishables if the fridge isn't cooling.
How to Fix It: Step by Step
- 1Check thermostat settings
Verify the refrigerator is set to 35–38°F and the freezer to 0–5°F. Controls are often inside the fridge. Also ensure the fridge hasn't been accidentally turned off.
- 2Clean the condenser coils
Unplug the fridge. Locate the condenser coils — at the back or underneath behind a grille. Use a coil brush and vacuum to remove dust. Dirty coils reduce cooling efficiency by 25–30%.
- 3Check the door gasket seal
Close the door on a dollar bill. If the bill slides out easily, the gasket has failed. A poor seal lets warm air in constantly. Clean the gasket with soap and water; replace if cracked or compressed flat.
- 4Listen for the fans
With the fridge running, listen near the freezer vent for the evaporator fan and at the condenser (back/bottom) for the condenser fan. If either fan is silent, the motor may have failed.
- 5Check for frost buildup (defrost failure)
Excessive frost buildup on the evaporator coils (behind the freezer back panel) blocks airflow. If found, the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer may have failed.

Warning Signs It's Getting Worse
- ⚠Fridge is running constantly without cooling down
- ⚠Clicking sound when the fridge tries to start (compressor failing to start)
- ⚠Hot spots on the fridge exterior
- ⚠Water pooling inside the refrigerator
When to Call a Professional
Call an appliance repair technician if the compressor is not running (no vibration felt at back of fridge), if refrigerant has leaked (hissing sound, oily residue near coils), or if the fridge is more than 15 years old — replacement may be more cost-effective.
