How to Patch Drywall

Drywall damage is one of the most common home repairs — and one of the most satisfying DIYs. Whether you have a small nail hole or a fist-sized gash, the approach is similar: patch, skim coat, sand, prime, and paint. The key to an invisible repair is feathering the compound and not skimping on priming.

Likely Causes

  • 1Doorknob impact (lack of door stopper)
  • 2Furniture bumping or scraping the wall
  • 3Old nail or anchor holes
  • 4Water damage or moisture intrusion
  • 5Structural settling or cracking
Severity: Low Urgency

Cosmetic in most cases. If the drywall is soft, wet, or crumbling, investigate for moisture or mold before patching.

How to Fix It: Step by Step

  1. 1
    Assess the damage

Small hole (under 1/2 inch): spackling paste. Medium (1/2 inch to 4 inches): self-adhesive mesh patch kit. Large (over 4 inches): California patch or backer board method.

  2. 2
    Clean the damaged area

Remove loose paper, broken pieces, and debris. For small holes, just clean around the edges.

  3. 3
    Apply the patch

Small holes: apply spackling with a putty knife, slightly overfilled. Medium: apply mesh patch, then joint compound. Large: cut a clean rectangle, add backer boards or use a drywall patch kit.

  4. 4
Apply joint compound in thin coats

Apply a thin first coat, feathering 6–8 inches beyond the patch. Let dry completely (4–6 hours minimum). Sand lightly. Apply 1–2 more coats.

  5. 5
    Sand smooth

Use 120-grit sandpaper to blend edges. The goal is a completely flat surface — run your hand over it in the light to feel for ridges.

  6. 6
    Prime before painting

This is the step most DIYers skip. An unprimed patch will show as a dull spot through the paint. Use drywall primer or PVA primer.

  7. 7
    Paint to match

Apply two coats of matching paint. Even with a perfect color match, the sheen may differ — paint the entire wall if a seamless result is needed.
