How to Fix a Roof Leak
A roof leak is an emergency that needs immediate attention — water inside your home causes structural damage, insulation damage, and mold within 24–48 hours. The hardest part is finding where the leak is actually entering, since water travels along rafters and sheathing before dripping on your ceiling. This guide walks you through finding the source and making a repair.
Likely Causes
- 1Failed or damaged flashing around chimney, vents, or skylights
- 2Missing, cracked, or curling shingles
- 3Clogged gutters causing water backup under shingles
- 4Damaged or missing pipe boot (rubber boot around plumbing vents)
- 5Ice dams forcing water under shingles (cold climates)
- 6Cracked or separated ridge cap shingles
High urgency. Water infiltration causes rapid damage to framing, insulation, and drywall. Act within 24 hours.
How to Fix It: Step by Step
- 1Stop active water damage immediately
Place buckets to catch drips. Lay down tarps or plastic sheeting to protect floors and belongings. If drywall is bulging with trapped water, carefully puncture it to release the water before it spreads.
- 2Find the source in the attic
With a flashlight, enter the attic and trace water stains back to their highest point. The actual penetration point is uphill from where you see the drip.
- 3Apply a temporary exterior fix if safe
In dry weather, apply roofing cement or self-adhesive flashing tape around the suspected entry point. Cover the area with a tarp if rain is coming and you can't fully repair it yet.
- 4Check and repair flashing first
Most leaks come from flashing failure, not shingle failure. Re-seal chimney flashing and pipe boots with roofing cement or butyl caulk. Replace if badly corroded.
- 5Replace damaged shingles
Slide a flat bar under the damaged shingle, remove the nails, slide in a new shingle, nail it, and apply roofing cement under the overlapping shingles.
- 6Monitor for 48 hours after next rain
Check the attic after the next rain to confirm the repair held. Look for new water entry points nearby.
